HSBC is the largest and leading foreign bank in China.
Our leading position today partly reflects our long history in China. HSBC was founded in 1865 in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and is proud to have maintained a continuous presence in mainland China for the last 142 years.
It also reflects our view that the China market offers extraordinary potential for the future. We see substantial opportunities to grow our business through the provision of international banking services to mainland Chinese citizens and companies, both through our own operations and through local institutions in which we have made strategic investments, as well as to international clients operating in China.
Early in 2007, HSBC incorporated its local operations in China, which are ranked first in assets, deposits and loans. We also have the largest number of outlets and staff of any foreign bank.
HSBC has made total investments of more than US$5 billion in local Chinese financial institutions, notably Bank of Communications, China’s fifth largest bank, Ping An Insurance and Bank of Shanghai, and in the growth of our own operations.
